Moving Truck
Here are some tips to familiarize you with the various rules and principles applicable to truck rentals:
Every truck rental agency demand a deposit before you pick up the truck which you have taken on hire. The type of deposit, amount and method of payment would vary according to location of the rental agency and the individual agency’s policies and principles.
There are many rental agencies which require a credit card hold of $150 for local rentals and $150 plus an estimate of the rental charge for one-way truck booking. In case you fail to return the truck on the scheduled date, the agency would place an additional hold on your card, covering the expenses incurred due to additional rentals, depending on the level of your delay. All holds will be released as soon as you return the truck. While you must read the terms and conditions as applicable to your hiring agency, remember, most agencies also accept cash deposit.
Many agencies put the entire responsibility of the safety of the truck on to the customer during transit. This means that you have to check with your existing insurance company, whether such truck rentals are covered. If not, then the rental agencies might offer you a variety of insurance policy options which provide you with the protection you need for the truck.
Since there are many insurance companies with a varied number of insurance plans and coverage you must check with your existing insurance company whether your own insurance will protect you in the event of an accident on the road. It is advisable never to take insurance coverage for granted. You could ask your auto insurance company for instance whether truck rentals can be covered where the concerned truck can weigh over 8600 lbs or under 25500 gross weight. Always keep your insurance coverage documents handy.
There are many truck rental agencies which offer Auto Tow Protection (ATP) an insurance that covers vehicles being towed. ATP offers coverage against damage caused by fire or explosion, flood, landslide, windstorm, etc.
A valid credit card is needed during reservation. Additionally your credit card will be used for the deposit required by the agency for the truck in the event of accident or damage.
You could cancel your truck reservation up to 48 hours in advance of your pick up time without having to pay any penalty. In case you cancel within 48 hours, a penalty of $50 might be charged.
Availability of a specific type of truck would largely depend on availability. If your requirement is for a specific kind of truck, then you have to book much in advance and avoid the peak timing.
A size guide would be able to help you with the right size of truck that you need to rent. Usually the size of the truck would be directly proportional to the number of bedrooms you intend to move. This chart also gives you vital information on the weight and dimensions of the truck as well as clearance heights, etc. Size of door openings, ramp widths and fuel tank size are also provided in this useful information sheet.
